Water Crisis in Michigan

If you’ve watched the news recently, I’m sure you’ve heard about the water crisis that people in Flint, Michigan are having to endure.  If you’re not familiar with the situation, read on to find out all of the scary and tragic details.

In April of 2014, the city of Flint changed its water source from the treated Detroit Water and Sewage Department water to water from the Flint River in order to save some money. 

The Flint River water is very corrosive due to a high chloride concentration. The corrosive quality of this water caused the lead from the old pipes the water traveled through to leach into the water supply. 

The terrifying result is that thousands of people, especially children, have severely high levels of lead in their blood. It’s hard to believe that something like this is allowed to happen, all to save a few bucks. 

And get this, officials kept telling the residents of Flint that their water was safe to drink.
