Water Crisis in Michigan

If you’ve watched the news recently, I’m sure you’ve heard about the water crisis that people in Flint, Michigan are having to endure.  If you’re not familiar with the situation, read on to find out all of the scary and tragic details.

Poisoned Water in Flint

In April of 2014, the city of Flint changed its water source from the treated Detroit Water and Sewage Department water to water from the Flint River in order to save some money.  The Flint River water is very corrosive due to a high chloride concentration.  The corrosive quality of this water caused the lead from the old pipes the water traveled through to leach into the water supply.  The terrifying result is that thousands of people, especially children, have severely high levels of lead in their blood.  It’s hard to believe that something like this is allowed to happen, all to save a few bucks.  And get this, officials kept telling the residents of Flint that their water was safe to drink.  Would YOU drink this water?  I sure as heck wouldn’t!

What’s in Your Water?

Even though most of us aren’t dealing with the same contamination that the poor people of Flint have to endure, we still aren’t completely free of toxins in our own drinking water.  Check out the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Tap Water Database to see which chemicals are in your city’s water supply.

Polluted Water Solution

One great solution to achieve clean and pure water is to invest in a water ionizer machine.  Ionized alkaline water is packed with hydrogen, a known antioxidant which combats free radical damage.  The best, top quality water ionizers have 2 filters inside of them that do an excellent job of filtering your tap water.  The top water ionizer brands send their filters to independent labs to be tested for how many impurities they filter out.  Be sure to look for filter reports when looking at a water ionizer company.  The best filters remove hundreds of contaminants including, but not limited to, lead and other heavy metals, pesticides and pharmaceutical drugs.
