Hydrogen Water – The Science

Hydrogen water: the new type of health water that celebrities and athletes are buzzing about. We all know that drinking eight glasses of water every day is essential to the body, but did you know that drinking hydrogen water can do much more for one’s health improvement? 

But what exactly is hydrogen water? Doesn’t regular water already contain hydrogen? 

We’ve already touched on this subject in one of our entries here, but this time, let’s delve into it a bit deeper, shall we?

How Is Hydrogen Water Created?

 First of all, it is correct to say that water already has hydrogen, considering that each of its molecules contain two hydrogen atoms. However, you can’t get hydrogen by drinking water, just as you can’t get oxygen the same way. That’s because both are chemically bonded to the water molecules.

 By drinking water, you simply get water. That’s pretty basic.

 With hydrogen water, however, dissolved hydrogen is added to the mix. Now, we dissolve hydrogen molecules into water in order to increase water’s antioxidant content.

 Hydrogen water is produced through electrolysis, a process that uses electric current to induce a chemical change in a liquid and splits the water molecule into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas.

 Through electrolysis, a “free” and available hydrogen gas is dissolved into the water and makes the water alkaline. This “free” hydrogen gas gives hydrogen water many of its benefits, one of which is reducing oxidative stress in the body.

Hydrogen Water And Its Potential Benefits

Molecular hydrogen has antioxidant properties, which means adding it to regular water increases your water’s antioxidant value. And while hydrogen is the most abundant molecule on the planet, not much was known about its health benefits until 2007, when a team of Japanese researchers found that the inhalation of H2 gas had the potential to suppress brain injury by mitigating the effects of oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress, by the way, is a result of the imbalance of antioxidants and free radicals in the body. Free radicals are natural by-products of continuing biochemical reactions in the human body. They are atoms with outer layers or shells that are not full, and bond with other atoms in an attempt to complete their shell. Over time, this process leads to oxidative stress.

Aside from having the ability to fight off free radicals and slow down the effects of oxidative stress, hydrogen water has other health benefits. One study described hydrogen to contain anti-inflammatory properties with the potential to reduce hypertension, as well as improve the symptoms of liver fibrosis.

 In this same study, researchers described hydrogen to have anti-lipidemic effect, which means it has the potential to lower the levels of total triglyceride, cholesterol, and low-density lipoproteins in the body. This is a significant finding, because it suggests that there’s a potential for hydrogen to play a therapeutic role in diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance.

 Furthermore, hydrogen water can be much better for your skin compared to regular water, as it can keep the skin smooth, healthy and wrinkle-free. Athletes can also benefit from hydrogen water as it can enhance their performance by reducing fatigue and inflammation. Health enthusiasts also say that it can increase one’s ability to focus.

 The list of the potential health benefits of hydrogen water can go on and on, but you get the point.
