Water Ionizers: Our Most Frequently Asked Questions

Before you read our responses to our FAQ’s – here is the research criteria that we use when testing various machines on the market, and what sets Ionizer Research apart from other ionizer review or comparison websites.

How Does a Water Ionizer Work?

  • A water ionizer works by filtering tap water that is then converted into alkaline water through the process of electrolysis.
  • The filtration process is one of the most important steps to the ionization process. When water ionizers filter your regular water, the most harmful contaminants and bacteria found are removed when passing through the machine’s plates and filters on the way to being converted into alkaline water.

 What Is Kangen Water?

  • Kangen Water is a “brand name” for ionized alkaline water…the same way “Xerox” is a brand name for a photocopy. Produced by Enagic, Kangen Water is simply one of the trademarked names for alkaline water.
  • A Kangen water machine can create many of the same benefits of alkaline water that other ionizers can…such as increasing your energy levels and helping to slow down the aging process.
  • An Enagic Kangen water ionizer MUST BE purchased UPFRONT – and if you want to maintain the functionality and quality of the machine over time, it’s going to cost you EXTRA.
  • You can purchase the Kangen SD-501 machine for $3,980 (plus tax, which is in the ballpark of $4,480), while the Enagic (Kangen) K8 machine costs $4,980 (plus tax, which is in the ballpark of $5,600).

Is Kangen Water Better Than Other Water Ionizers?

  • Kangen water machines are sold primarily through Enagic’s independent sales reps, while most other water ionizers are sold directly through the manufacturer or an authorized dealer.
  • An Enagic Kangen machine uses a single water ionizer filter…which is very small and incapable of protecting you and your family from toxins or other contaminants if your source water happens to contain salt or heavy metals. What we find to be even more disappointing is if you’re considering one of the Kangen machines – Enagic WILL NOT provide you with a free water analysis that can reveal what’s hiding in your water!
  • The Enagic (Kangen) K8 machine uses 8 solid plates…and solid plates are known to be strong. However, Kangen’s plates just DO NOT WORK with hard water, nor can they provide the same level of ionization as some of the other premium units on the market can.
  • When buying from Enagic – you will only be given a 3-day trial period to set their machine up AND notice if drinking Kangen Water can make a difference in your life. 3 days is clearly not enough time…especially since some people may not even get around to setting the machine up within 3 days.
  • Enagic also forces a limited 5-year warranty on their customers that will be VOIDED if you don’t send your water ionizer in to be cleaned by their staff. What may be harder to wrap your head around is the excessively vague warranty stipulations that can absolutely scare you away, considering the high price tag of Kangen machines.

Can I Just Buy a Water Ionizer Pitcher or an Alkalizer?

  • While both options offer a simple way to enjoy water that is alkaline – the best way to get the true health benefits of alkaline water is by using a high-quality electric water ionizer.
  • A water ionizer pitcher may be an economical option for most consumers – but these pitchers have only a fraction of the capabilities that an ionizer does. Not to mention – these pitchers cannot remove the harmful toxins that are lurking around in your water supply, they won’t give you molecular hydrogen, and they just don’t provide quality antioxidants. The only thing we like about ionizer pitchers is that they are a decent option to look into when going on a vacation.
  • An alkalizer (or non-electric machine) is an affordable option available to help you finally kick your bottled water habit. However, an alkalizer is incapable of making alkaline water that contains most of the health benefits that can only come from using an electric water ionizer machine. If you want to drink alkaline water that’s truly healthy with all the benefits…the water must be ionized through the process of electrolysis. No electricity = no ionization.
  • Overall: Since electric water ionizers offer so many more benefits than non-electric alkalizers, and because electric water ionizers are becoming so much more affordable now with financing options – it only makes sense to go with your gut and buy an electric water ionizer.
